About the region
The coastline of the Calvados department offers miles
and miles of vast open sandy beaches, picturesque
family resorts and lively market and harbour towns.
The main city and administrative centre is the
historical town of Caen.
Normandy’s hinterland is known as the Bocage, a
gentle varied countryside with green pastures and
apple orchards and which remains beautifully
unspoilt.
The region is blessed with a temperate climate due to
the moderating influence of the sea. The lack of
weather extremes contributes to the ongoing
popularity of the region which is seen as a pleasant
year round destination and as an ideal location for a
second home.
A good transportation network
The region of Normandy benefits from excellent
accessibility from the UK with several ferry services
to Caen Ouistreham and Le Havre and to Cherbourg and
Dieppe further afield. In addition it is only 3
½ hours’ drive from the Channel Tunnel
and the French capital Paris is a 2 hours’
motorway journey.
