On the west coast of France, the Vendée’s wild
coastline has mile upon mile of golden sandy beaches
sloping into the Atlantic sea, fabulous dunes and
fragrant pinewoods. Perfect for water-sports or
relaxing in the sun, it has as many hours of sunshine
as the Côte d’Azur. The Vendée has a
longstanding maritime connection.
Fresh fish and seafood can be found in abundance in
the colourful markets and fishing harbours
dotted along the coastline. Acres of vineyards
produce wines such as Muscadet. The regional capital
of Niort is an important
financial and service industry sector while la Roche
sur Yon was built as a
garrison town by Napoleon, and is today a busy
commercial and manufacturing centre.
